Uri Caine

Uri Caine, a jazz and classical pianist, was born in Philadelphia on June 8, 1956. Caine started playing piano when he was seven years old and began studying with Bernard Peiffer, a French jazz pianist. Later, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania under George Crumb. He worked in Philadelphia clubs and gained more knowledge of classical music during this time. After 1981, he began playing professionally and in 1985, he had his first recording with the Rochester-Gerald Veasley group. He moved to New York City in the 1980s, where he still lives. He was also a part of a klezmer band with Mickey Katz, and played with Don Byron. He was classically trained and he chose to homage Gustav Mahler, which earned him the “Best Mahler Album” award.
