Walter Roland

Walter Roland, the pianist/singer, is still one of the most mysterious and mysterious blues artists despite a prolific recording career that produced upwards of 40 single sides. He also had a number of notable collaborations with Lucille Bogan. He was likely born in Birmingham, AL around 1900. He first made his mark on the blues circuit in the 1920s. Jabo Williams, another enigmatic pianist, also ran in the same circles. Roland, who was a talented, versatile pianist whose repertoire ranged from slow, heart-wrenching blues and exuberant boogie woogies, was persuasive vocalist and a great guitarist. Between 1933 and 1935, he visited New York City three more times to record for ARC. During this time, he also accompanied Bogan (now known as Bessie Jackson) and recorded with Sonny Scott u0026 Josh White. Roland appears to have disappeared from the planet after 1935.
