When bassist Nate McBride moved from Boston to Chicago in 2005, Wheelhouse was founded. He was looking for other musicians with similar interests in Chicago. The band was originally formed with the intention of playing compositions. However, they decided to move away from this approach in 2008 and instead pursue a free-improvised approach. The band’s slow development has created an almost telepathic relationship between its members – each of them are notable soloists or leaders, but in this context they seek a more group-oriented sound that allows for a leader to emerge and retract in unexpected ways. The absence of a drummer allows for more sonic space, which exposes many melodic and harmonic interactions within the group. This creates a setting that can go from very quiet passages to dense and energetic ones. The long-awaited first recording of the group, “Boss of the Plains”, will be released on May 13, 2013 by Aerophonic Records. from http://daverempis.com/wheelhouse
