Woodwired Duo

WoodWired, a duo based out of Dallas, Texas, has been described as “fabulous,” “adventurous, and spellbinding” (KSZU Stanford Online). They perform regularly across the country using live looping software, electronics, and other technology. They play contemporary and classical music and create upbeat, new sounds that combine jazz, classical, pop, and other genres. WoodWired “takes jazz/classical/electronic music to the next level of the game.” (Midwest Records) WoodWired is known for their groundbreaking use of live electronics in a chamber music setting. Their unique sound is quickly becoming a popular genre. Their music is popular at concerts, residencies at universities and conferences across the country. However, it also works well in intimate settings. WoodWired released In The Loop, their debut album, in March 2018, under the University of Texas – Arlington Record label. This album is described as a “true, virtuosic touring d’force” by Audiophile Audition. It features almost all original compositions by WoodWired. It was featured on multiple platforms, including being named Jazz Weekly’s “Ringer of the Week” and topping the Classical/Experimental chart on Stanford Zookeeper Online in July 2018. Hannah Leffler is a Miyazawa Emerging artist. She has held faculty positions in flute at Luther College, University of Northern Iowa and Northeast Iowa School of Music. She currently lives in Texas where she completed her Doctorate of Musical Arts in flute performance at The University of North Texas. She also worked as a Teaching Fellow. Dr. James Scott and Professor Terri Sundberg were her primary teachers at UNT. She has been a featured clinician and guest artist at many schools and events in the Midwest, including at the University of Northern Iowa’s Exploring Chamber Music Festival. She has performed with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and as a principal substitute flutist for both the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra (Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra) and the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra. She is currently a member of the Movere Woodwind Quintet which is comprised of Lutheran Summer Music Festival faculty. Hannah is also the founder of WoodWired Duo (an electroacoustic duo featuring Cheyenne Cruz, bass clarinetist). She earned a Master’s degree in flute performance from the University of Northern Iowa. There she worked as a Graduate Assistant and studied with Dr. Angeleita. She was awarded the UNI Outstanding Creative Master’s Thesis Award, and she was nominated by her peers to be an Outstanding Alumni of UNI Graduate School. Summa cum laude, she graduated from Oklahoma City University with an undergraduate degree in flute performance and was a student at Parthena Owens. Kristin Grant and Stefan Ragnar Hoskuldsson are also among her teachers. Hannah was recently a winner in the 2017 National Flute Association Young Artist Competition. She was also named the winner of the Francis Walton Artist Competition. She was awarded first place in 2012’s NFA Orchestral Audition Competition and Masterclass Competition. Hannah was a winner in the Myrna Brown Artist Competition and the Atlanta Young Artist Competition. She also received the Crescendo Music Awards and the Couer d’Alene Young Artist Competition. She was also a featured soloist with U.N. Texas Symphony Orchestra and University of Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra. She was awarded the Theodore Presser Award in 2008 for excellence in music. In addition, she was elected to the honor societies Pi Kappa Lambda Phi and Phi Kappa Phi. She is an active member in good standing of the Texas Flute Society and National Flute Association, where she has served on many committees. In 2016, Dr. Cheyenne Cruz joined University of Texas at Arlington’s faculty as a Lecturer in Clarinet u0026 Music Theory. Cheyenne Cruz was recently honored as a Buffet Performing artist. She currently serves as the second clarinetist with the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra, and the bass clarinetist with the Longview Symphony Orchestra. She was previously the Adjunct Clarinet instructor at Stephen F. Austin State University and the Teaching Fellow for chamber music at the University of North Texas. Cheyenne received her DMA degree in clarinet performance in 2015 with a related field of music education from the University of North Texas. Additionally, she holds a Master’s in clarinet performance degree from Florida State University as well as a Bachelor’s in music education degree from McMurry University. Cheyenne performed Scott McAllister’s Black Dog concerto as a soloist at the Texas Music Educator’s Association convention in February 2017. She has performed with the Dallas Winds and the Lone Star Wind Orchestra. Cheyenne is an active chamber musician and has participated in the Fischoff and Plowman chamber music competitions. She is currently a member the Madera Wind Quintet, where she performs with Jorge Cruz, her husband. Cheyenne, along with Hannah Leffler, is also composing and playing amplified clarinet in WoodWired. Cheyenne was also a performer and has published an article in The Clarinet Magazine. It is a monthly journal of the International Clarinet Association. The article is entitled “A Pedagogical guide to playing bass clarinet in a wind ensemble”. She also completed her undergraduate thesis, “Mickey Mousing Squared”: Postmodernism and Cartoon Music. For this thesis she received special honors in Music History. Dr. Kimberly Cole Luevano was her clarinet teacher. Dr. Frank Kowalsky is her major clarinet teacher. From www.woodwiredduo.com
